What is TED?

Started 30 years ago in the spirit of “Ideas Worth Spreading” TED has grown to host 2 annual global conferences where the World’s leading Thinkers and Doers give short format talks--less than 18 minutes or less--on a diversity of topics from how to live on mars, to human beat boxing, to the beauty of human skin in every color, to how great leaders inspire change. Past speakers include Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, and Sir Richard Branson.

What is TEDx?

TEDx is an independently, locally organized event that brings people together for a TED-like experience.  At TEDx, live speakers and pre-recorded TED Talks combine to spark audience discussion and connection.

Why TEDx?

Because our community, the whole Tri-Cities and Mid-Columbia region, need new ideas that are genuinely worth spreading. We saw a deficit in our community and wanted a platform where we set aside bias, opinion, and bad science.  We want to be an catalyst for open-minded discussion and debate; a voice of positivity and change; a hub where the audience, speakers, and organizer can connect, collaborate and create with freedom.

Why TEDxRichland and not TEDxTriCities?

Oh, we tried!  Strict rules regarding municipal locations narrowed the list, thus it could not be TEDxTriCities.  After several rounds of back-and-forth we decided TEDxRichland was the most inclusive sounding of the exclusive options we had.  It's not because we think Richland is better.  The fact is, the event is being held in Richland so we'll just call it like it is!  Although the name has identified only 1 of the cities, we have the ability to create a really diverse, progressive, thought-provoking and fun event!

What is a TED Talk?

It might be a little different than you think...a TED Talk is a showcase for speakers presenting great, well-formed ideas in under 18 minutes. Check some of the amazing playlists of previous talks on TED.com: https://www.ted.com/playlists

Why under 18 minutes?

This short talk model works, since it only demands the audience's attention for a short period of time, decreasing the chance of minds wandering or daydreaming about lunch. In fact, some of our greatest TED Talks have been as short as 5 minutes long!

What is a great, well-formed idea?

It can actually be one of two things:

  • Something that’s new and surprising; an idea or invention that your audience has never heard about.

  • A great basic idea (that your audience has maybe already heard) with a compelling new argument behind it that challenges beliefs and perspectives.

  • In other words, an idea isn’t just a story or a list of facts. A good idea takes certain evidence or observations and draws a larger conclusion.

Where did TEDxRichland start?

An idea, of course!  Specifically the “We Should Do That!” wall at TriConf 2015. We started out as a team of 4 and have grown to an team of 14 organizers and a cadre of event volunteers.

When is TEDxRichland?

How many people will be in the audience?

Last year, attendees numbered around 300 and we expect that number to grow in 2018.
